She rode a city bus every day.

In those days, the buses were segregated: African American had to go to the back of the bus if a white person wanted their seat.

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to obey. She decided not to give her seat to a white person. The bus driver shouted at her.

" Give up your seat ! »  She quietly said « No » . He screamed at her: « I’ll have you arrested !» . She calmly answered: « You may do that. » . She was arrested.

This led back to black boycott Montgomery buses. Slowly but surely the bus company began to lose money  - 75 percent of its riders were back.

Boycotters chose to walk, ride bicycles to get to work instead of boarding buses.

The boycott lasted 381 days. Then the law was changed.

Rosa Parks has been called the « mother  of the civil rights movement »

During the 50’s and the 60’s men and women demonstrated against segregation everywhere in the USA.
